Lucky for us Floridians, Tony and Jimmy Starova uprooted their New Jersey pizza joint and relocated to the heart of Downtown Clearwater, serving up slices, calzones, and other tasty Italian treats. The scene: Tony’s Pizza & Ristorante is in a spacious location in the 400 block of Cleveland Street, convenient to the downtown office buildings for weekday lunches and the Capitol Theater and Coachman Park for special events. The restaurant has two main entrances; use the one on the left if you want to grab take-out, or get a ready-made slice and eat at one of the tables they have designated for single diners. If you’re looking for a more complete dining experience, enter through the right door and grab a table. The decor is minimal, and the atmosphere is both family-friendly and appropriate for a lunch with your co-workers. Table service can be slow, so if you’re in a rush, take your order to-go.   The food: The core dish at Tony’s is the pizza, and that’s what the brothers do best. You can order by the slice for the most popular options, choose one of the menu selections, or create your own. The pies are true New York style pizzas; greasy, thin-crusted concoctions topped with bubbly cheese and just the right amount of zesty marinara. The dough is crunchy on the outside, chewy and soft on the inside -- the perfect crust to hold your favorite toppings. One bite of a slice from Tony’s will have you adding them to your short list of go-to pizza joints. If you decide to stray from the pizza menu, Tony’s has several other options to satisfy your Italian craving, though none are done as well as the pizzas. Gigantic calzones stuffed to the brim with cheese and anything else you crave are a close second, but the marinara that comes on the side is served cold, making it an unappealing dipping sauce. Sandwiches come on a crusty bread, but the fillings range from scrumptious to...not. The eggplant parmigiana sub in particular needs a bit of work. There are also a full range of pasta dishes, salads, traditional Italian entrees, and much more at Tony’s. The damage: Two can eat during lunch very inexpensively at Tony’s -- even the super-sized subs won’t put you out more than $8.50, and you can buy two cheese slices and a coke for $5. Dinner is a different story, though; typical entrees run about $12. Pizzas range from $11 - $18 for a large 16 inch, depending on your topping preferences. So if you’re on a budget, stick to the lunch shift. Insider tip: Street parking on Cleveland is tricky at best. Save yourself some hassle -- and a few quarters -- by using the lot behind the restaurant, off Laura St. The bottom line: If you’re looking for excellent New York style pizza done right, you can’t go wrong at Tony’s
