Asher D. Bonfoey was an accomplished violinist performing with the Euclid Avenue Opera House. His wife, Della, was a skilled seamstress. Back in 1890, Asher created a frame for a valentine for his wife. When friends saw the frame, a demand for his work began. What started as a hobby quickly became a full time business, Bonfoey Company was established in 1893. The original location was at 368 Erie Street ( now East 9th St ). As business increased, Bonfoey Company relocated to East 4th Street and Prospect. Bonfoey would remain at this site for sixty years.Over the decades, Bonfoey Company developed a reputation as the finest picture framing establishment in Cleveland. In 1927, George R. Moore joined the firm and gradually arranged to purchase it. He obtained full ownership in 1938 at the time of A.D. Bonfoey's retirement. As the years progressed, Bonfoey Company's focus on fine art increased. In 1955, George Moore's son, Richard G. Moore joined the firm and was made president in 1971. In 1963, Bonfoey Company again moved to larger quarters, its present location at 1710 Euclid Avenue. Bonfoey Company today continues to provide the same knowledgeable and personalized services it has since 1893.
