The Connecticut Water Company was created in 1956 through the merger of the Guilford-Chester, Conn. and Naugatuck, Conn., water companies. Immediately after its incorporation, it acquired the water utility holdings of the Connecticut Light & Power Company in the Connecticut communities of East Windsor, Enfield, Stafford, Suffield and Windsor Locks. By the end of 1956, the Connecticut Water Company served about 75,000 people in 16 Connecticut towns through 20,500 service connections. Through growth in its service areas and numerous acquisitions of other water utilities, the company now serves nearly 241,000 people in 36 Connecticut towns through 68,000 service connections. As a public water company in the state of Connecticut, the Connecticut Water Company is regulated by numerous state and federal laws with respect to water quality and water resources. The state Department of Public Utility Control authorizes water rates and quality of service.
