Meh...Roll of the Dice

I went to them on 3 occasions to get brake work done on my volvo. First I had the front ones done. No problems there. Then about a month later I had the rear set done; same shop, different technician. I brought in pads but not rotors so they only changed the pads. To their credit Tech 2 did ask "you just want the pads done right"...keep in mind this is the first car Ive ever owned and I just dont know anything about them. I also operate on the assumption that if something isnt right, the mechanics will tell me for the sake of money making if not for altruistic concern. (Note he only asked if i wanted the work done but offered no further information) On with the story... I took my car home and the rear brakes continued to squeak. I brought it back and asked them to take a look at it. Tech #2 offered to take it around the block which he did. While he was out I chatted it up with the shop owners mother who expressed her desire that i return and remain a customer. It was a nice conversation. When Tech #2 returned, claimed he heard nothing and offered nothing more than a blank stare beyond that. I assured him something was wrong and asked him if he could take a look at the brakes. He did:He pulled out his flash light, aimed it at the rear wheels and looked at them...I think he may have poked them with a stick too...Anyway it was my turn to return the blank stare. We had a stare off and he continued to demonstrate how useless he could be until i asked for the owner. I explained to him there was something wrong with my brakes; even though they replaced the pads they were still making noise. I explained I would like for them to examine my brakes. He was reluctant and indifferent. When I stated I might have to go somewhere else to have them looked at I was essentially left with nothing more than a shrug and an open invitation to take my business elsewhere; which i did. It turns out my brakes were squealing b/c the unchanged rotors were well under the legal limit. Needless to say his mothers warm conversation could not undue the overwhelming sense of incompetence & lack of concern i experienced. Im sure theyre not that way with everybody. I did meet one girl a not much younger than myself who stated her familys been with them for years. The first guy who put my brakes on did a stellar job (which i pointed out to them). But cars are expensive and i cant afford inconsistency and poor quality work.

So now Im with a new mechanic who is knowledgeable, friendly and responsible. They are more than willing to tell me what to expect what is, is not or should be regarding my car. I always expect the mechanic to know more than me and to tell me if he even suspects somethings off. It is my decision whether to have the work done but it is his responsibility to make certain I know my car is safe. If you want to roll the dice go with Autopros. If you are looking for a good mechanic I recommend Alltech (professional friendly & knowlegeable), Import Auto Clinic (he knows what hes doing and has fair prices) or Weldone Automotive (honest, knowlegeable, personable).

Good luck
