Grace changes everything. That’s the message we long to share with the residents of Clovis. It is our testimony and our mission. Grace causes men to joyfully accept suffering and persecution and the plundering of their possessions because they know “a better possession and an abiding one” (Heb 10:32-34). Grace is the treasure worth more than all our belongings. It’s the pearl of surpassing value (Mt 13:44-46). None of this makes sense if Christ is not our treasure. We will never part with earthly joys if the kingdom of God is not a pearl of infinite value to us. None of this is worth it, if we haven’t already received grace upon grace (Jn 1:16) and if God hasn’t promised us an eternity where one day with him is better than a thousand elsewhere (Ps 84:10). The clearest picture of this is the substitutionary sacrifice of our Lord. “For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich” (2 Cor 8:9). The only reason we can sacrifice anything is because we know that in Christ we have everything! Grace is where the incredible truth of the Gospel overcomes the complex longings of our hearts and changes us for good! When the Gospel intersects our lives, we cannot remain unchanged.
