The United States Olympic Committee is comprised of more than 70 member organizations and is the coordinating body for Olympic-related athletic activity in the United States. The USOC is a federally chartered, nonprofit corporation that supports United States Olympic and Paralympic athletes in achieving competitive excellence and preserving the Olympic ideals. The organization offers many programs with the goal of building public understanding and awareness and stronger relationships with other organizations, as well as promoting diversity in sports. Founded in 1900 and headquartered in Colorado Springs, Colo., the organization is recognized as one of 199 national Olympic committees by the International Olympic Committee. The USOC operates athletic training facilities in Colorado Springs, Colo., Chula Vista and Carson, Calif., Birmingham, Ala. and Lake Placid, N.Y.
