The Columbia Police Department is responsible for crime prevention, public safety and law enforcement services. It has a special investigations division that handles crimes against persons, including homicide, robbery, child abuse, and sexual and aggravated assaults. The department also intervenes in cases of burglary, fraud, forgery, embezzlement, arson, vehicle theft, and credit card and computer crimes. The Columbia Police Department has a Special Weapons and Tactics team and youth and community services units. It also operates a domestic violence enforcement unit that investigates domestic violence cases, promotes deterrence of violence, assists victims and interrupts the cycle of violence.
