My husband and I were shopping around for some commercial properties in Lexington County, SC. We came across a property on Augusta Highway with the listing under Dunlap & Edwards LLC. My husband decided to give them a call to inquire information about the property. He spoke with a man named Michael Edwards. Mr. Edwards asked my husband what type of business was he going to establish if he leased the property to him. My husband told him that he was going to open a Barber Shop.



Mr. Edwards then stated, "I don't want to do business with yall, because yall run drugs in and out of barber shops.” My husband (a black man) was shocked and explained to Mr. Edwards that he was stereotyping him. Completely disgusted by Mr. Edwards comments, my husband hung up the phone. My husband was enraged by the fact that Mr. Edwards thought he was a drug dealer, because he was a black barber.



Upset by the whole incident, I called Mr. Edwards back to explain to him that we felt insulted. Mr. Edwards then told me that he did not wish to speak to me any longer, and we both hung up the phone.



I'm completely livid about the entire situation. We did not deserve that type of treatment. My husband and I are both Veterans. He served the Coast Guard for 10 years faithfully, and I served the US Marine Corps for 4 years faithfully. We are both college graduates. He has his degree in Business Management and I have mine in Criminal Justice. This is not to mention the fact that my occupation is in law enforcement. We are both hard working Americans that do not deserve to be put down because of the color of our skin. We have never nor will we ever participate in any illegal activities.



Mr. Edwards refused to conduct business with us, because he thought we (black people) would be selling drugs from out of our place of business. He should be very ashamed. His comments have really affected me and my husband. My husband is a very hard working man, and he did not deserve to be insulted by Mr. Edwards; simply because he was trying to fulfill his dreams for his family. I feel like Mr. Edwards owes my husband an apology. He had no right to treat him with such disrespect. The customer service we received was a complete ZERO!!
