Located in Columbia, S.C., South Carolina Department of Archives and History is an independent state agency that aims at preserving and promoting the documentary and cultural heritage of the state. The department houses one of the largest state archival collections in the United States, spanning more than 325 years of South Carolina history. The agency's mission is to encompass historic preservation, history education, and records management and conservation. The department s conservation services include a full-service paper conservation facility, with services available to the public. Visitors to the center use state s legislative, executive, military, court, county, municipal and state agency records to compile family histories, write books and articles, and compose school papers and projects. The agency also comprises the South Carolina Archives and History Foundation, a private nonprofit organization that supports the programs of the department.
