Founded in 1936, Francis Marion and Sumter National Forests encompasses an area of more than 600,000 acres. It offers various recreational opportunities, such as hiking, biking, hunting, picnicking, shooting, fishing, camping, birding, rafting and paddling. The forest provides timber and other wood products and maintains a location in Columbia, S.C. Francis Marion and Sumter National Forests serves as a habitat for several fish, bird, animal and rare plant species. The forest additionally offers various volunteer opportunities. It provides maps and brochures, as well as publishes a range of articles on wildlife-related issues. Francis Marion and Sumter National Forests is also engaged in wilderness area management, minerals leasing and watershed protection and improvement.
