Founded in 1821, the Columbus Police Department provides law enforcement to the community of Columbus, Miss. The department is a division of the city s government. Its primary responsibilities include providing enforcement of laws that relate to crimes against persons and property, as well as initiating investigations into such crimes. It also enforces codes and ordinances pertaining to traffic and parking. In addition, the department participates in programs that are geared toward community awareness and crime prevention. The police department maintains records and compiles reports regarding emergency calls, types of reported crimes and offender registrations. It also files reports on behalf of residents pertaining to crimes and traffic accidents. The Columbus Police Department employs more than 110 people.
