This is the only place to get your dog food in the south and southwest suburbs. They have an excellent selection beyond your Blue Buffalo variety. The staff is very knowledgeable. Happy that they now carry Fromm Dog food.

I can't believe the negative reviews I've read, especially the "race card" one! I've shopped here for at least 20 years, and NEVER seen nor heard any of the people who work here be rude to ANYONE. They are very knowledgable about everything they carry, and if they aren't sure about something, they will find out for you. They have been life savers when my dogs and cats have gotten old/and or sick and needed special nutrition or diets. I no longer have fish, but I've never seen any of their tanks dirty. Makes me wonder what the attitudes of these people were when they walked into the store. As far as prices go - if they can't keep a price lower than the chain stores on an item, they'll quit carrying the item rather than overcharge for it. I've sent many people here over the years!
In answer to the comment about there being no pets for sale in the store: GO TO A SHELTER! Pet stores promote overbreeding, and abuse of animals. Adopt a homeless one, and have a friend for life!

Everyone that works there is great! Can't beat the prices.

I do not shop anywhere else for my dog food. I love the Joy dog food and the dog treats! Call ahead to make sure it is in stock. Not fancy, but worth the trip!

Would never shop here. Staff does not know what theyre doin. Dont purchase joy dog food!!!!!!

I have shopped at this place for years for my dogs and I can't say I'd rather shop anywhere else for them unless I can't find it there. Their prices are much better than the chain stores with regards to dog foods and treats. I've read some of these bad reviews from others indicating race and that's the furthest from the truth with these people who work at the store. As far as not selling pets there, I am glad. If you want a pet, find a certified reputable breeder or go to a shelter. Seeing a pet caged all day long is not what I want to see when I walk into a pet store. These people are hands down the best. My only knock on them is there can sometimes be a disruption with their inventory, but that primarily is on the distributor. I travel 20 mins to shop there and well worth it.

I used to LOVE this place, i hadn't been there in a while and decided to stop by. i was heartbroken to see that many of the fish were dying, in tanks that were dark and dirty on the inside and out. it used to be bright, clean, and healthy. i will not give my business to a store that cares so little for the living things it is supposed to be taking care of.

They have been doing things right for over 40 years. Sell great product at great price$! The staff have been there for as long as I can remember.I have only purchased dog & bird food products They seem to have trouble keeping the stock up but it seems to be a manufactures problem at times. The ONLY place I buy my dogs food & bird food!

Best products for dogs! Deer chow and cracked corn for wildlife. Great bird seed and feeders! Chris is the guy to talk with! very knowledgeable and super friendly. I highly recommend Capital even though it's a half hour from my home!

Capital Dog Food is now OPEN on Sundays. Very knowlegable sales people.

Apparently they are doing something right. they have been in business too long, over 40 years that I know of. I have dogs that have allergies and they have been more than helpful and knowledgeable about their products as to what would be beneficial alleve their problems. Other than not being able to keep some of their products in stock they are the best around for price I travel 30 minutes to go there.

I’ll pay double before I ever walk into here again. I’ve had reef, saltwater, and freshwater tanks for over 13 years. Prices are high. Selection is average, quality is below average. Like others have posted the fish staff is uneducated and very RUDE. Never have I been treated so low in my life from any employee. If your looking for fish or supplies don’t waste your time here go else where. Aquatica in Tinley is great they value their customers unlike Capital. If your looking for unfish related items the employees seemed fine.

Walked in expecting to rub and hug a dog or a cat but didn't get the chance BECAUSE THEY DON'T SELL ANY!!! Also walked to check out the few fish they had and the employee was very rude and sort of boring. Asked a 100 stupid questions then treated me as if i was crazy for setting up a fish tank with sand instead of gravel. FYI SAND HELPS MY PLANTS GROW AND ITS EASIER THEN HE PROBABLY KNEW. I can careless about it being a family owned business. I will drive 20 further and find better pet stores.

Maggie, I think your "Hey Lady" comment was out of line, mostly because it's wrong. I wouldn't call Capital Foods "primarily a dog food store," because I have shopped there for years and never bought dog food. Cat food, I've noticed, is more expensive than at the chain stores. However, we buy all of our yard bird feeding stuff there. They have a great selection of seeds and feeders. They also have a program where you can buy a whole winter's worth of seed at discount, but you don't have to pick it up all at the same time. Also, in the back room, they have LOTS of fish, both freshwater and saltwater, and a tremendous amount of fish tanks and equipment. We've had good luck with the employees - most seem to know their products pretty well and can make suggestions based on your needs.

A previous poster talked about 'the Race Card' and felt that she was receiving discriminatory handling due to her race. She wanted aquarium fish and was told that they didn't have many. Hello, lady, this is primarily a dog food store and I personally have never seen fish displayed....but then, it would never occur to me to look for fish there!The last time I was at the store the clerk was talking dogs and telling funny stories with a customer. They were enjoying themselves for quite a while. The clerk was white and the customer was black. I think that customer would have been surprised to hear that there were discriminatory practices against his race!I have received excellent customer service and assistance at the store. They provide the quality products that I want for my pets at very reasonable prices.

This family owned business is excellent. Good prices, friendly, helpful people. I get all my pet supplies from Capital Dog Food Store.

I don't usually "play the race card," but if you are a person of color, don't bother going to Capital Pet Supplies! Needing more fish for our tank, my husband and I went to Capital at the suggestion of our neighbors. When we entered, a man asked if he could help us. When we told him we were there to look at fish, he said they didn't have many. We should have taken the hint then, because they had lots of fish! When we decided what we wanted he began to grill us in an extremely dismissive way, acting as though we had come to purchase a Ferrari with Ford money. Finally, his condescension was too much. We left without making a purchase and took our business to a nearby chain store. It's unfortunate that chain stores are forcing neighborhood stores out of business, but when it's clear that certain customers are not wanted in your business, you deserve what you get. We won't be back.

CAPITAL PET IS THE BEST!!!! FANTASTIC SERVICE. KNOWLEDGABLE STAFF. AND EVERYONE IS FRIENDLY. IT IS GREAT HAVING A PLACE LIKE CAPITAL PET TO GOT TO.
