Do not rent!!

I moved into this studio/apartment building in 2012. My roommate and I wanted to live downtown as he started working a new job in the area and I had just graduated from UC (I could afford it I was making pretty decent money). When we originally spoke with the landlords we under the impression that the apartments were a "Take as is" type of situation. We noticed there was a lot of wear and tear in the building but both of us really loved that about the place (lots of character). When we saw the apartment that was available the doors were painted black, the shelves were painted black and the cabinets looked like they were spray painted red and been repainted over with white paint. (In fact all of the bottom cabinets we had to pry open just to use them because instead of painting them the right way they painted the over the cabinets with the doors closed). When you paint over cabinets that had been spray painted the outer layer of paint begins to peel. When we pried the cabinets open we noticed that the edges of the door started peeling the white layer of paint. We decided to take a video before we moved anything to make sure we have documented the condition of the apartment. We were still ok with everything and decided if we wanted to we could just repaint (we loved that they allowed tenants to do this). Well a month into our lease my roommate cause a bit of damage (fell asleep with the tub running) and we got hit with a pretty hefty bill (that we are paying off to this day). We decided when the lease was up to move out and knowing that we are already paying off the damages that my roommate caused in full, none of the costs should be taken out of our security deposit. 3 months go by (after we move out) and finally get our security deposit back. We only got $173 out of the $650 we paid for the deposit. Here is what they charged us for:1. Repainting all the walls, the black doors, the black shelves, and all the cabinets. (firstly, the doors and shelves were painted black when we moved in and NOTHING chipped that paint....those items were as black as they were when we first moved in. secondly, they charged us for re painting cabinets they painted wrong in the first place, and thirdly we had about 6 pictures hanging on the walls, nothing else (normal wear and tear) and they charged us for ALL of the walls.) 2. They charged us for cleaning the oven. My roommate and I only cooked in that oven once a month (as the oven really never worked, only 1 burner worked on the whole stove). We also noticed when we wanted to clean the oven that there was no drip pan. We bought a drip pan and left it with them as we knew in any other apartment we would move into after this wretched apartment they would ALL HAVE DRIP PANS. 3. They charged us for a leak in the apartment. My roommate and I (both) on several differenct occasions called JLM (after hours during hours etc) that there was a leak in our apartment and that we could hear the water leaking onto the floor and when we checked there would be a puddle of water....they charged us stating we "failed to notify JLM of the problem"..... OUTRAGEOUS 4. They charged us for a toilet seat. When my roommate cause the damage, when maintenance was in our apartment laying new floor, we told them that we were having problems with the toilet seat and that it would not stay up (the toilet is from the 70's). They said they would let the right person know and that was the last we heard about it.5. They charged us for a new shower head. When we first moved in my roommate and I were use to taking showers but we noticed that no water came out of the shower head. We decided to take baths and would call JLM later about this problem but after the toilet seat and the leaks and the problem we caused we decided our attempts to resolve the p...
