I was a volunteer at this facility for over a year. I noticed very few of the employees that worked there had any semblance of a sense of humor. Most were morbidly serious. Once while I was wheeling a resident back to her room after lunch I asked the resident if "she wanted to go fast, maybe do a wheelie". My humor was overheard by the Executive Director, Cynthia Stevens who quickly counseled "that kind of humor is not allowed, as someone might overhear you and think you are serious." I am a retired Teamster semi driver who at the time still had an active CDL. I offered to get qualified by the Lane House and drive the small bus that was parked on the property but never used. Some of the residents wanted to attend church and I thought I would volunteer my time and experience as a professional driver and take a few to church on Sunday. I offered my services to Cynthia Stevens free of charge or if necessary for insurance reasons would gladly except employment at minimum wage and even donate the money back to the Lane House, if I could take what ever tests were necessary to get qualified and be able to take some of these people to church. Cynthia said "that wasn't possible." Christmas Eve of 2014, I dressed up like Santa Claus and for hours passed out gifts to the residents and staff. Gifts that I purchased with my own money, spending over $900. Hoping to bring a smile or a giggle some of the presents for the staff were supposed to be humorous. One in particular was a tee shirt that had written on it "Coma Sutra" and pictures of a lot of comas. It was a parody of the Indian Hindu text entitled Kama Sutra. Over 50 gifts were passed out to the residents and staff and the comment I got from Cynthia Stevens was that this gift was "inappropriate." The staff member that received the tee shirt kept it, said nothing to me but complained to management.



I found the environment at the Lane House toxic and will no longer volunteer there, and I would certainly hate to live there.
