Provided by YP.comSharing & Caring is located one building over from Bridgeway, so it's sort of a shopping center for the unfortunate. They have a very experienced staff -- the ones we saw are approximately 100 years old. S&C truly believes in sharing. We never heard of any food bank giving away food in the quantities they do: four eggs, one stick of margarine, four slices of cheese food, half a dozen tea bags, two cups of rice in a Ziploc bag... it's jaw-dropping (without being, y'know, stomach-filling). Bread availability is never a problem, though you should apparently use it that day or throw it in the trash. Instead of "day old" bread, this is "day left" bread. Grocery stores give away unsold food as a tax write-off (at least somebody comes out ahead), so the stalest and least palatable perishables ("perished" foods?) are in stock. Store brand spaghetti sauce and sloppy joe mix is offered without meat, inspiring head-scratching meal creations. Smallest jar of peanut butter we ever saw, apparently India has different ideas about taste and consistency. Usual allotment contains creamed corn and peaches, French-style green beans, and a bag of dry beans that should be cooked for several hours in order to be edible. Grits and corn muffin mix are likely. Always read the container before you open it; look for expiration dates and place of manufacture. Be wary of anything "organic," which has probably already lost freshness. These folks open at 9am and close at 11am (1045am according to the hand-written sign), for your added inconvenience, and they are open 2 days a week, subject to change without notice. They have hard-and-fast rules which will exclude you about 1 visit out of 4, so just know that. Bring friends along to split the gas, otherwise no chance of breaking even. For best results, go to a grocery store afterwards to pair up the loose ends. You'll laugh because no food bank would operate like this; you'll cry, because oh yes they do. Good luck, you'll need it.
