Roy J. Carls, M.D., recently opened a new orthopedic surgery practice in Cumberland specializing in foot and ankle surgery, and general orthopedics including sports medicine, arthroscopy and carpal tunnel releases. Most recently, Dr. Carls was in private practice with the Greater Chesapeake Orthopaedic Associates in Baltimore. Previously, he was the staff orthopedic surgeon and team physician at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis. He was also on staff at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, where he also did his residency training. Dr. Carls has been providing coverage for local orthopedic surgeons at WMHS on a part-time basis for the past two years. Board-certified in orthopedic surgery, Dr. Carls did his internship at the Portsmouth Naval Hospital in Virginia and completed a foot and ankle fellowship at Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore. He received his medical degree from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences School of Medicine. Dr. Carls was trained as a Navy flight surgeon and served with the Second Marine Air Wing, based in North Carolina
