Provided by YP.comEating alone? No problem. Everybody cross-talks from table to table. Doing a crossword ? Could get the answer from a contractor, a copywriter or a tattooed Deep Ellum musician. Reading and want to be quiet and alone? Take a left-side back table. Have kids? It becomes the "Village" that happily takes care of the little people. At any hour, you are welcome in your sweats, dressed from the office, or with purple hair, aged 6 months or 80 years on a walker. It is a lively neighborhood , family-owned place that becomes addictive. (I have been going since 1983 and my husband and I for 15 years!)
The burgers are home-made, the eggs fresh, the bacon crisp, the meatloaf or enchiladas or daily specials always delicious. They have vegetarian goodies too. The cooks, kitchen help and waitpeople are all family and George, who runs the place, is as kind and easy going as they come.
This has been one of the best kept secrets in Dallas except when the Dallas Observer nearly wrecked the joint with overcrowding after becoming one of its "Best of Dallas" winners a couple of years ago. There are lots of new places to eat in the area...Uptown...Greenville Ave., Henderson, etc., all more expensive, often pretentious and short lived. Some restaurants offer "an experience in fine dining". The Gold Rush Cafe offers an "experience of comfort food among extended family."
