Provided by YP.comTook a feral cat there to be neutered. Had been going to another local vet for decades with my animals. They are good too, but have grown to a less personal size. They had so many rules about seeing a feral cat. It needed to come in a live trap, even though I had been feeding him by hand.
I called Dr. Rutherford and as long as I could get him there, she would take care of him. Not only is she closer to my house, she treats my neighbor's housecats and barn cats. My neighbor refers to her as the "cat whisperer". So I figured I should give her a shot.
What a great experience. She handled my cat carrier filled with hiss and vinegar with dexterity and compassion. She encouraged me in my attempt to bring this cat into my household and gave me much appreciated tips on how best to do so. In spite of what other veterinarians, friends and much of the internet said, with patience, it was possible to tame this feral cat and now he is one of the most gentle, affectionate cats I've ever met.
Yes, she might seem a little quirky to some and others may call her unprofessional. Perhaps a large staff, a large waiting room and a different doctor each visit who blows in and out, never sharing his/her thoughts or stories seems"professional" to some. I call that impersonal.
I think Dr. Rutherford knows that treating animals also involves getting to know and support their owners so their pets can live in a healthy and happy environment everyday. Part of building a relationship involves sharing who you are on a personal level. To dismiss that as idle chit chat or whatever else the critcs on here called it, seems pretty ignorant and impatent.
I'm glad to have found her and hope she can maintain a small, efficient, personable, homey type practice.

Provided by YP.comThey will waste your time with small talk rants, while neglecting to examine your pets. You will quickly learn why there is never customer vehicles in the lot.
Incompetent, unprofessional, and down right annoying. "If they provided quality service the small talk would be bearable"

Provided by YP.comTook our pup & told her we thought it had a blocked bowel, she never x-rayed & said we were wrong, Gave it a shot & a few pills. Pup almost died because she mis-diagnosed & disregarded our blocked bowel idea which the pup did have. A real vet knew it was a blockage right away & saved the pups life. IMHO if you love your pet go to a pro, not a hack. I thought it odd I drive by all the time & no cars, now I see why :-(

Provided by YP.comDr. nancy is very experienced and spends a lot of time with her patients. She is friendly, knowledgeable, and a true asset to to her profession. We have taken our dog to her for four years and we have been impressed with each and every visit. She truly cares about her customers and I trust her with all my heart. That is saying a lot because our little dog is a huge part of our family and we would never trust just anyone. She is everything an EXCELLENT vet should be! I highly recommend her and we would not take our little doggie to any one else!!! Try her, you will like her a lot!!!!

Provided by YP.comFeeling compelled to write a review and a response to the negative one also posted here. Dr. Nancy has gone out of her way to accomodate our family with our aging pets. She has made home visits, and euthanized 3 of our cats in our home (in our arms) with our entire family present and then told stories of her past pets to my children to help ease the pain. We have had pets for years, and three vets in Portage while we lived there, and NONE of them ever developed a personal relationship with us as Dr. Nancy has. I believe this is completely appropriate considering pets are family members. With regard to the animal bite mentioned above...I find it interesting that the actual person that suffered the bite did not review...is she still taking her pets there? She may be! Dr. Nancy often rescues animals from the area so if you go in to see her, you will see other animals. On a visit to her last year she had an old, def basset hound that had been hit by a car howling in one of her rooms that she was treating. He had been laying at the side of the road and no one was doing anything about it! Someone called Nancy so she went to pick him up and treat him. If this was your dog, wouldn't you want someone to do this? Dr. Nancy is a good vet and the care our pets (and our family) recieves is phenomenal. We are glad we've found her.

Provided by YP.commy boss went to Decatur Family Pet Hospital to pick up some pet meds for her 3 dogs that she has taken there for a while now, she walked in and the owner's mom's dog bit her in the leg. The old lady proceeded to yell at my boss as if it were HER fault that she was bit. All my boss wanted to do is pick up meds. for her dogs and leaves with a bleeding leg that needs medical attention. DO NOT GO TO DECATUR FAMILY PET HOSPITAL! you might limp away having to pay hospital bills that could be larger than your vet bill.! Sept. 22nd. 2011
