American Academy, located in Delray Beach, Fla., is an institution designed to help students with average and gifted intelligence who are functioning below their grade level. In many cases, the students have mild to moderate learning disabilities. The academy offers small classes, and the student-teacher ratio is 12-to-1 for children in first through sixth grade. All teachers are certified to teach students with learning disabilities. The lower school students at the academy receive individualized instruction, and the academic curriculum is customized for the child's strengths and weaknesses. The students are also offered art, music, computer studies, investigative science and physical education. Additionally, they are offered drawing, painting, ceramics, drama, choral music and band classes.
