The Iowa State Patrol is a law enforcement agency that preserves lives, citizens rights and property. It employs a staff of more than 375 state troopers who routinely patrol over 110,000 miles of state roadways. In addition to traffic responsibilities, the agency assists during major incidents or occurrences, such as prison riots, labor disputes and natural disasters, including tornadoes and flooding. The Iowa State Patrol also enforces various motor vehicle laws. It operates a communication center that provides support services to the Department of Public Safety, as well as the Governor's Office, National Guard, Department of Natural Resources and Department of Transportation. Established in 1935, the Iowa State Patrol maintains an office in Cherokee, Iowa.
