Founded in 1913, The Iowa Department of Education works with the Iowa State Board of Education to provide oversight, supervision and support services for state education systems that include public elementary and secondary schools, area education agencies community colleges and teacher preparation programs. The department administers various adult literacy programs that include the Adult Basic Education, English as a Second Language and English Language Learners. It also offers career and technical services in the areas of agriculture, business and information technology, family and consumer science, health occupation and marketing. The Iowa Department of Education also provides professional development and veteran and military educational services.
