The Iowa Department of Human Rights, founded in 1986, promotes equal access to work, services and opportunities for the residents of Iowa. It consists of various divisions, commissions and an administrative support unit. The department s divisions develop policies and recommend regulation priorities, new programs and constructive actions to the governor and the general assembly. Its community action division serves as an advocate for low-income, elderly and disabled residents of the state. The department s criminal and juvenile justice planning division carries out research, policy analysis, program development and data analysis activities to assist policy makers and justice system agencies. It also administers federal and state grant programs to fund local and state projects. Located in Des Moines, Iowa, the department also operates a commission on the status for women that represents the interests for women in several areas, including sexual harassment, divorce, nontraditional jobs, domestic violence and education.
