The State of Delaware Governor s Office houses the governor and related administrative offices for the State of Delaware. The governor is responsible for executive orders, legislative decisions, speeches and task force creation. Delaware was the first state in the United States and has a population of more than 800,000 residents. Delaware's fourth and current constitution, adopted in 1897, provides for executive, judicial and legislative branches. The governor serves as head of the executive branch of the state's government. Its first governor, formerly called a president, was John McKinly, who took office in 1777. The offices of the governor are at the state capital of Dover, Del. The official governor's residence is called Woodburn.
