FTR, a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, was started in 2000 by a group of farmers, fishing guides, scientists, conservationists and government agency representatives that shared concerns about the health of the watershed. FTR was established to develop a thorough scientific understanding of water resources in the Teton Basin, and to use that knowledge to protect and improve those resources. FTR spent its first four years primarily focused on research and establishing baseline data for water quality, ground and surface water hydrology and fisheries in the Teton Basin. Based on this research, FTR developed a watershed restoration strategy that prioritizes fish passage improvements, habitat restoration and stream flow restoration on the Teton River tributaries as the most important steps for reestablishing overall watershed health. FTR coordinates watershed protection activities that support these strategies with state, federal and local government entities. FTR also partners with state agencies to monitor fish populations, ground and surface water quality, natural stream flows and irrigation diversions. Since its inception, FTR has served as a technical consultant to agencies and elected officials on water protection issues and on land use planning which protects water resources. An active watershed education program for youth and adults is also an important cornerstone of our work. FTR teaches a district-approved watershed science curriculum for K-12 students; reaching over 400 students a year through hands-on field trips and classroom work. Adult education programs include workshops, classes and public forums about pertinent watershed related issues. FTR believes that “science is a universal mediator” and educating the public about watershed science fosters a sense of stewardship and promotes collaboration among stakeholders.
