Carter Community School is a public school, offering educational instruction to students from grades kindergarten through eight. The school maintains small class sizes with a ratio of 17 students to one teacher in grades four through eight, and 20 students to two teachers in grades kindergarten through three. It teaches a variety of subjects, including mathematics, social studies, science and technology, computer science, health education, English, arts and crafts, music, and physical education. The school partners with students from Duke University, North Carolina Central University, and the Watts School of Nursing to provide mentoring and academic enrichment classes in art, health, Spanish, ballroom dancing and drama. It also hosts the Project HOPE after-school program sponsored by Kellogg Foundation. The school offers various extracurricular activities, such as after school clubs and intramurals, and has athletic teams for sports, including basketball and volleyball.
