Wainwright and Audrey Scott founded Scott's Yankee Farmer, their very own farm stand and orchard, in the 1960's. They had four children, though Tom was the only one interested in continuing the farm tradition. Tom graduated from East Lyme High School and went on to pursue a degree in agriculture from the University of Connecticut. Upon graduation, he returned home to join his parents in the daily operations of the farm. In 1975, Tom married Karen Wheeler and she joined the family business. Tom and Karen acquired the overall operations of the farm when Wainwright died in 1989. Tom and Karen have four children, Michelle ( 1978 ), Justin ( 1982 ), Allison ( 1986 ), and Colin ( 1988 ). Michelle obtained a Master's degree in Sociology. Married in November 2009, she currently works in Manhattan and resides with her husband, Nick Manno, in Queens, New York. Justin is also married. He and his wife Katie and two-and-a-half year old son Jacob reside in Middletown, CT. Allison is working full time on the farm with the family and enjoying her new baby boy, Jaxson, with husband Nick Schmitz. Colin is currently attending Three Rivers Community College in in Norwich CT, and proudly holds the title, Doughnut Manat the farm stand. The farm certainly has seen many changes over the years - some good, some bad. Presently our farming operation consists of 125 acres of which we own 100 and lease the remainder. We grow fruits and vegetables including apples, peaches, sweet corn, pumpkins, strawberries, as well as, spring bedding plants, summer cut flowers, and fall mums. Our produce is marketed through our road side stand as well as through our Community Supported Agriculture ( CSA ) program, and pick your own.
