The soldiers of the Florida National Guard are part of a long heritage of citizen-soldiers that began with the first Florida militia, which helped guard the St. Augustine settlement in 1565. Since then, Florida's army has served in the war with Spain, on the Mexican border, in two world wars and the Persian Gulf War. The Florida National Guard consists of several major commands, including The 32nd Army Air and Missile Defense Command, the 53rd Infantry Brigade, the 83rd Troop Command and the 50th Area Support Command. It also operates the Camp Blanding training site, which receives and supports designated units for federal and state missions and provides administrative services, training and logistical support to state and federal agencies.
