Established in 1946, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), a part of the U.S. Department of Interior, manages and conserves resources on more than 250 million acres of land. The bureau also maintains over 700 million acres of subsurface mineral estate. It administers mineral leasing and oversees mineral operations on the federal mineral estate and manages mineral operations on Indian lands. The Bureau of Land Management additionally operates nearly 55 million acres of commercial forests and woodlands. The bureau manages more than 18,000 grazing permits and leases and over 10 million authorized livestock animal unit months on nearly 160 million acres of public rangeland. It maintains a range of activities, such as outdoor recreation, livestock grazing, mineral development and energy production.
