The North Carolina Department of Transportation, founded in 1971 and located in Fayetteville, N.C., provides a range of services to the people of the state. The department is divided into more than 10 main divisions with over 13 local division offices under the division of highways located geographically throughout the state. These local division offices are responsible for construction, maintenance, roadside environmental programs, traffic services, and the fiscal and facility operations involved in administering these functions. The division of motor vehicles operates more than 120 driver s license offices, mobile driver s license offices, weigh stations and enforcement district offices. The North Carolina Department of Transportation employs a staff of more than 14,000 people.
