Today I had the most uncomfortable and demeaning visit to the Social Security Office in Florence, AL. I don't think I have ever been treated so rudely in my life. I realize government employees are overworked and underpaid and have a tough but that was no excuse for her behavior. I sat down and she asked what I needed. I told her and she huffed angrily and turned to her computer. She began asking questions. I am hard of hearing and I had to ask her to repeat some of them. The last time I asked, she shouted loud enough for security to respond. They asked what was wrong and she, "nothing, I just had to talk loud. I was humiliated. I vowed then and there that I would not ask her to repeat. She said that she didn't think I was understanding and getting what she was saying. I calmly replied that I was hard of hearing not stupid and I wanted to ask just what I had done wrong. She shrugged and said "nothing." She then said my social security card that I have been using for 45 years was wrong and I needed a new one. I have used that same card for 45 years with no complaints from anyone. She said the name was wrong but it was ok before I visited the office. By that time, I was in tears. I have to go see her again to bring back needed papers, but I am almost afraid to go back at all. There is no excuse for treating people, who help pay her salary, like dirt. My rant is over now.
