Engaged in pellet processing, United Taconite has a location in Forbes, Minn. Located in Minnesota s Mesabi Iron Range, United Taconite also maintains mining facilities in Eveleth, Minn. Previously known as EVTAC Mining Company, United Taconite produced its first pellets in 1965. It was idled in May 2003 after filing for bankruptcy protection. The mine s assets were acquired in December of that year by a subsidiary of Cleveland-Cliffs and Laiwu Steel Group. Cliffs Mining Company is the managing agent. Cleveland-Cliffs is one of the largest producers of iron ore pellets in North America. The company sells a majority of the pellets to integrated steel companies in the United States and Canada. It operates more than five iron ore mines located in Michigan, Minnesota and eastern Canada. The mines have the capacity to produce nearly 40 million tons of iron ore pellets annually. Cleveland-Cliffs and its associated companies employ approximately 4,000 individuals. Its corporate headquarters are maintained in Cleveland.
