The Conservation Camp Program is administered by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, which is a part of the State of California. The program helps offenders to learn valuable skills, teamwork and discipline. Established in 1946, the Conservation Camp Program provides a trained work force for fire suppression activities. It trains more than 4,000 male and female inmates, who respond to various emergencies, including floods, earthquakes, and search and rescue operations. The program also serves cooperative agencies. The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation manages over 35 adult and juvenile camps.
