Provided by YP.comI am quite dissatisfied with the service I received
(or rather didn't receive) at Computer Renaissance in
Fort Collins.
A month or so ago I spent over $700 on a used HP
Pavilion. Despite the fact that the machine came with
no software CDs, the slightly overweight sales/repair
associate assured me that if I had any problems I need
only use the repair partition on the HD or, failing
that, I could bring the machine back to the store
where they have several flavors of XP CDs.
I bet you can't guess what happens next? Yes, blue
screen of death. It's a stop error. The machine won't
load XP. Not even into safe mode. It won't run the
recovery program (you know, F10 on startup) and I
don't have any way of accessing the recovery
partition. After mere minutes of research and on my
other PC, I have a fix! I need only run a chkdsk /r
from the recovery console and I should be able to boot
XP again. No problem, right? I can take it back to the
store and they'll pop in an XP disk, get to the
recovery console, do a chkdsk /r and in 10 minutes
I'll be in my happy place... right?
Wrong.
The same overweight sales associate tells me he's
going to charge me Between $120 and $140 to repair my
now useless but easily fixable PC. ? ? ? Are you
KIDDING me?
With this depressing news, I ask for a manager... and
behold I get the store owner! Huzzah, I am saved!
I expressed my distress at the news to the store
owner, who simply (and not in a particularly friendly
manner mind you) stated that it was not his problem
that HP doesn't ship software with their PCs (ok,
true... but he still chooses to sell their hardware)
that he was not willing to give or lend me a copy of
XP for the 10 minutes it might take to run a chkdsk /r
(ok, but maybe he could have one of his guys do it?)
BUT that he was more than willing to have his guys
take a look... for $80/hour or approximately $120-140.
I have since contacted HP, purchased recovery disks
for $28.62, run a chkdsk /r and FIXED my PC in
approximately 12 minutes time... and I will -never-
return to Computer Renaissance Fort Collins, nor would
I recommend them to anyone for service, sales, or support.
I'm pleased that this gentleman was able to get recovery disks from HP and fix his computer in 12 minutes. Frankly he is one of the fortunate few. These days, NO major computer vendor includes operating system CDs with their computer, HP has just been using Recovery Partitions longer than most. We did offer to do 10 to 12 minutes of service 'for free', but emphasized that 90% of the computers that come in to our shop have virus-created problems, which take hours to solve and cost $120 to $150. If he had actually bought in his computer, and the 'fix' had taken less than 20 minutes, his cost would have been $25. What he really wanted was to 'borrow' a $100 Microsoft OS CD, which I wouldn't do, nor would I make him a copy (the average penalty for NOT following the Microsoft Licensing is $70K per incident). The gentleman apparently didn't trust us to see for ourselves what kind of software problem he had, and to charge no more than our minimum if it did turn out to be a 15 minute fix.
