On Valentine's Day 2018 I flew back to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, which was my home for 59 years before I moved to New Jersey. The occasion was a solemn one, the passing of my dear childhood friend's wonderful wife. Add to that the fact that the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School (eight miles from Fort Lauderdale) occurred just five hours after my plane landed, and needless to say, I was disconsolate, even though I was in the company of loved ones (also formerly of Fort Lauderdale) who have been my dear friends for almost half a century, who had come in from Georgia and Virginia for the funeral, and whom I no longer get to see nearly often enough.

We decided to go out for dinner and settled on Pelican Landing. A bad restaurant experience would have only exacerbated our depression, but I am grateful to be able to truthfully report that the food, service, and ambience were all absolutely superb! I am vegan, and when I asked our server (Raphael G.) if anything on the menu was or could be prepared as vegan, he was honest and said that he wasn't sure but that he would ask the chef, who in turn graciously prepared for me a vegan feast which was truly delectable, even going so far as to include a specific dressing that he assured me is vegan!

Such honesty and accommodation in servers and chefs is so extremely important to those of us who are vegan for ethical reasons and are thus careful to never cheat on our diets. People of less integrity would have simply told me what I wanted to hear.

Our experience at Pelican Landing was so pleasant, in fact, that it enabled us to forget, if only for a while, the sad circumstances under which we had reunited, and we managed to have a good time in spite of them. (The only reason I gave Pelican Landing four stars instead of five is that nothing is actually cited on the menu as being vegan.)
