Fort McCoy is a United States Army and Army Reserve training facility in Wisconsin. Fort McCoy is named for Robert Bruce McCoy, the son of a Civil War captain, who reached the rank of major general during his 31 years of military service, which included service in the Spanish-American War, the police action in Mexico, and World War I. The installation has been in almost constant use since its founding in 1909 and has provided artillery and maneuver training opportunities for hundreds of thousands of military personnel from all services and troops processing for mobilization/demobilization through the installation. Its facilities are spread over an area of more than 60,000 acres and include rifle and artillery ranges, training areas and classrooms that support individual and collective training sessions. Fort McCoy s primary mission is to support the readiness of the U.S. Armed Forces by serving in a continuing capacity as one of the Army s Power Projection Platforms by processing and preparing soldiers for duty in the Global War on Terrorism.
