This restaurant is a huge disappointment. Two in my party had the "salmon on a plank".
The salmon was WAY overcooked and tasted like burned wood. The salad was still
frozen in places with the cucumber having a soft mushy consistency. The deep fried
scallops were the only edible item served to us and the waitress seemed unconcerned.
I feel like we should have been paid for eating there.

My family is rarely in the area and so when they came down to visit me in Winona I took them to the Hillside Fish House for a special dinner out. We were a party of eight with reservations and they were not ready for us when we arrived. The dining area was packed and very noisy. We ended up waiting nearly an hour for our food and service was mediocre throughout the evening. Then we got our food...

The fish fillets were all disastrous. Two walleyes and a grouper fillet were all way under-cooked, rubbery and raw in the middle and soupy on top, as though they had been microwaved! The kicker was that we had all ordered our fillets prepared differently, but they all looked as though they had been microwaved or steamed. Mine was supposedly broiled, but I can guarantee you that it had not been inside an oven (no browning or crisping whatsoever.) My father ordered his tuna blackened and it came out looking like charcoal. At least his was cooked in a pan...

Overall the quality of the food was very poor. The "american fries" were slimy/soggy and the garlic bread was just a raw white hoagie with garlic butter spread and then loads of powdered parmesan dumped on top.

I don't usually write reviews, but I was so pissed at my experience here that I have decided to post my story all over the net. Dine at Hillside at your own risk.

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

My wife and I visited on 10/18/2010. We ordered the Hurricane meal for two, which provides Alaskan king crab legs, Walleye, shrimp and scallops. We ordered soup to start. My wife asked for the Manhattan clam chowder, which she found to be very bland. I ordered the corn chowder with sausage, which I thought was excellent. The King crab legs were half cooked with one end/side warm and the other end ice cold. We complained to the waitress and she brought replacement legs with the same result. TERRIBLE!! We ordered the walleye with lemon pepper seasoning. The seasoning was way overdone so that you could not taste the fish at all. The breading on our deepfried shrimp was a bit heavy and overdone. But the cook did manage to get the broiled scallops done right. Maybe it's expecting too much to bring all of these elements together but then they shouldn't offer it if they cannot cook it all right for one dish. I cannot recommend going here based upon this night's result.
