I started smelling a gas odor 1-2 weeks ago when we had painters begin a painting project in our home, but just now decided to call. It was considered a gas emergency! Whenever I'd turn on the stove or dryer, I smelled a kerosene-type odor. I called Customer Service and the lady told me some precautions I needed to take and said a technician is being sent over right away. The technician arrived within the hour. Before he checked anything, he explained that the odor is possibly coming from our having our house painted. He said that it is common to smell that kerosene smell when a house is being painted, because the flames from the stove/oven/water heater or pilot lights, etc. draw in the chemicals from the paint fumes and burn them, and that's where the kerosene smell comes from. He checked for leaks at all of the appliances and did a thorough check outside as well at the gas lines. He found no leaks inside the house, again just odor from the paint. He found one small leak at the line outside near the meter which he repaired. Good to know and such a relief that there was nothing major and that he did the thorough check!
