Incorporated in 1869, the Gainesville Police Department works to provide law enforcement services and maintain law and order. It maintains an operations bureau that is comprised of community resource and crime analysis units. The department s specialty unit has joint aviation, K-9, bicycle and mounted units. In addition, the Gainesville Police Department operates negotiation response, traffic safety and Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) teams. It also utilizes an investigation unit that is comprised of forensic crime and special and criminal investigation divisions, as well as hosts the crime victim advocate program. The department offers information regarding identity theft and personal and residential safety. The Gainesville Police Department conducts neighborhood watch and gang awareness programs. It maintains a sex offender registry and enforces noise and traffic ordinances.
