A Blue Ribbon School, the Austin Academy for Excellence enrolls more than 900 students in grades six through eight. Founded in 1963, the academy provides classes in writing, reading, science, math and social studies. It offers instruction in foreign language, physical education, band, choir and orchestra. The Austin Academy for Excellence also provides guidance counseling, health care and special education services. The academy administers the English as a Second Language program. It offers opportunities to participate in several sports activities, such as football, basketball, and track and field. In addition, the academy provides career and technology classes. The Austin Academy for Excellence is a part of the Garland Independent School District.
