Gary Sanitary District is the sewage management department for the northern Indiana city of Gary. The Gary Sanitary District carries out its responsibilities under the standards and regulations of the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the Indiana Department of Environmental Management. After creation of the Gary Sanitary District in 1938, the board of sanitary commissioners initiated a construction program that included several interceptors and a wastewater treatment plant. This original plant was activated in 1940. The treatment facility was an activated sludge process designed to provide secondary treatment, with nominal capacity of 20 million gallons per day to 40 millions gallons per day. Expansion and improvements began in 1962 to increase the treatment capacity of the plant. The total asset value of the district s treatment plant totals more than $400 million.
