Established in 1958, the Federal Aviation Administration is a regulatory body responsible for the safety of the aviation industry. It is engaged in the development and operation of air traffic control and navigation systems for civil and military aircraft. The agency administers aviation insurance programs; develop specifications for aeronautical charts; publish information on airways and airport services; and records technical subjects in aeronautics. It additionally offers research and evaluation services for aircraft engines, aviation systems, and related devices and materials. The agency provides equipment testing, documentation, air traffic management, engineering, technical support and training services. It also offers aircraft, airport and pilot certification programs. The Federal Aviation Administration is a part of the U.S. Department of Transportation.
