The Granite City Police Department provides law and order enforcement services. Founded in 1896, the department operates through various divisions and can accommodate more than 20 prisoners. Its detective division investigates a variety of crimes, including cases of homicide, arson, burglary, theft, forgery, computer crimes, armed robbery, and aggravated battery, sexual assault and abuse. The Granite City Police Department has undercover detectives assigned to the neighborhood intervention team that intervenes and arrests those responsible for illegal narcotic sales, distribution and possession. It also maintains nuisance abatement and special response teams. The Granite City Police Department additionally offers a Drug Abuse Resistance Education program.
