Since 1945, Great Lakes Calcium Corporation has been processing calcium carbonate from high calcium limestone. Its primary market was the agricultural feed industry, which required a pure calcium carbonate with specific particle size distribution for various animal feeds. The company has become involved in industrial markets for calcium carbonate. It processes the calcium carbonate that is used in papermaking; is involved in the initial research and supply of calcium carbonate for the capture of sulfur dioxide in fossil fuel burning boilers; supplies fluidized bed boilers, limestone injection systems and various air scrubbing devices; provides engineering firms with calcium carbonate to adjust pH and tie up contaminants in the treatment of industrial wastes prior to landfill or incineration; and has supplied calcium carbonate to remediation sites where it is used to prevent heavy metals in contaminated soil from becoming soluble and polluting the ground water.
