The Animal League does a wonderful job placing cats and dogs in forever homes! I've adopted dogs there and I'm about to do so again. I believe the best thing about
no-kill TALGV (besides the volunteers) is that it's the ONLY local animal shelter that gives you an online biography of each animal so you can immediately rule out dogs that are appropriate for your situation. that way you don't set your heart on a dog's photo and decide to take him home even though it's not a good fit. That's the beauty of being a smaller facility so many dedicated volunteers.
The bio includes:
1. Past history (how the pet arrived at the shelter, information provided by owners when surrendering, former adoption dates if any, etc.)
2. Temperament requirements if applicable (needs to be an only dog or cat, not good around children, etc.)
3. Any special needs (medical issues, etc.)
4. PLUS, older dogs get free pet care for life!

This is a nice facility but the animals are kept in small areas and would be better off adopted by people who can spend lots of time with them and offer plenty of room to run around in, loving care and their own family. We have those things to offer. We are retired and home all the time, have acreage and give our 3 dogs the best food, love and vet care. They spend lots of time napping in our great room, chasing our golf cart around the property and taking walks with us, and their evenings are spent in front of the fireplace. Our vet says they are some of the most fit dogs that he sees. We have had many years of experience with our dogs. We drove 2 1/2 hours to get to the facility and fell in love with a lovely dog who would have thrived in our home. However, they insisted we return and bring our oldest, 12 1/2 year old dog to the facility to meet their dog. Our dogs never leave our property except to go to our vet. We have 21 acres for them to run around in and spend all our days with them. They welcome our guests and family and are very mellow and happy. Our 12 1/2 year old is a very old dog and the trip would have been extremely stressful for him and would have confused him greatly. We have other dogs who have come to our household since we got him and have had no trouble with him accepting them. They love each other and are a family. Since we did not want to put him through this stressful 5 hour round trip, we were denied the ability to rescue the little dog from their facility thus denying him a loving home with us. We are older adults and were given no respect for our knowledge about pets. We are quite disappointed. Although the facility is nice and the volunteers are nice, the animals would certainly be better off in loving homes and more effort should be made to accommodate persons who offer such homes to them. All of our dogs are rescue dogs and there are many other facilities, so we will find another little one somewhere else to love.

We just got our first animal (a cat) from TALGV and we agree with most of the reviews on this site. Rude and condescending are mild terms for the way we were treated. I am 74 years and have had pets, both cats and dogs, all my life. We had just lost one of our cats at the age of 12 and we wanted to get a companion for our remaining cat. After much hesitation and making us return twice -- and after filling out endless forms to justify why we "deserve" another cat --- we were reluctantly given a cat that turns out to have been a feral cat and which had spent 4 years in the TALGV. The cat is still pretty much wild, but seems to be slowly settling in (after clawing our current cat to the point of needing a vets care). We were not told this at the time of "adoption". The volunteers who work directly with the animals seem to all be loving, caring and professional, but try to avoid the administrators if you can possible do it.

New to the area I decided to check out the local Animal Shelter and was impressed with the size and cleanliness of the enclosures. Many of the dogs are in foster care so there is no over crowding and they get to continue living a 'family' experience until they find their 'forever' homes. Having been a volunteer and witnessed dogs that have been returned, as well as owning two that were returned twice because it was either not the perfect dog or the owners were 'moving', I completely understand a shelter's hesitation, or what appears to be unrealistic strict rules, regarding whether an animal is placed or not. I think it is more about attempting to make the best decision in regard to ensuring an animal is being placed well, rather than a judgement or personal statement. Could they be wrong? Certainly, but the job of any good shelter is to not just give away animals, but to care, protect and ensure that these animals are in 'forever' homes and don't keep experiencing love and loss.

Kareen who does the adoptions is very rude and unpleasant. She was condescending to my daughter and I. They don't like children at this place. The cat we took home was riddled with parasites and refused to use the litterbox. We spent hundreds of dollars at the vet getting the animal healthy. Overall a very bad experience.

We called to report a cat in our back yard in case the owner called TALGV and had the unfortunate experience of being connected to "Wendy" who was officious, inefficient, and argumentative. Undeterred by this we called another local organization, Paws Patrol, and spoke with a person who was pleasant and efficient even though our call caught her working a festival.

I give 5 stars to the Green Valley Animal League because I don't know a more friendly and accommodating shelter than this one. All the people there have, to me, gone beyond their own comfort zone taking my own beloved pets I can no longer care for. I have taken 2 cats other shelters couldn't find companions for and they found homes for each of them within 2 weeks. If they want you to go beyond YOUR comfort zone and you are unwilling to do that in filling out papers or bringing your pet to them for often good reasons you aren't aware of, then perhaps you aren't highly evolved enough to take on the responsibility of caring for the only one in your life who can give you unconditional love.

If you are looking to adopt a pet, I would urge you not to base your visit to The Animal League on the negative opinions voiced on this site. Calling anyone a Nazi who is not a Nazi just shows your breathtaking insensitivity and lack of perspective. The "dowagers" referred to are incredible women who donate their time to the animal shelter seven days a week, 365 days per year. When they have prospective pet owners complete paperwork, they are following the guidelines established by the Animal League, the largest and most professional no-kill animal rescue organization in the United States. If you didn't make it past the reception area, there obviously was something in your paperwork that did not qualify you to be a pet owner. And yes, they probably do ask personal questions, but these questions determine your qualifications to own one of the League's pets, and since some animals come from abusive and neglectful homes, the adoption specialists are charged with the responsibility of ensuring that is not the type of environment the pet is being sent to. Each animal at The Animal League is unique and beloved, and The Animal League is not going to turn them over to a home that is unsuitable for the pet. To anyone reading this and contemplating adopting a pet, please go and look at the absolutely wonderful cats and dogs who are up for adoption, you might just find the love of your life.

I've had a similar experience to the other 'one star' posts. Went there to adopt a dog as a companion for the one I have. So after filling out my life history and way too much personal information on pages and pages of forms I was told I would have to bring MY dog there. What? Why? They said so that they could observe my dog and the one I chose together. So the next day I bring my dog and the two dogs get a chance to meet. They treat each other just like most dogs do when they meet a strange dog. They were weary of each other. Mine stayed near me, the other stayed by the attendant lady. I was then told "NO!" you may not adopt this dog. Why? Because they were not immediately friendly toward each other. I also saw one of the old women there berating a poor young kid who was volunteering. Kid was almost in tears. The shelter building itself is very nice. Quite the opposite of some of the staff. I would suggest avoiding this place and trying somewhere that actually wants to have their animals adopted.

I have a family of 6, 4 of which are children. I went in for a German Shepherd (sam) was dined and told that my type of family style would not be right he was 1in yr old and house broken his family left him because they were moving . I was not given a chance they just kept pawning me off on dog that were small, old, or female after I stated many times I have wanted a male. Don't get me wrong they were nice about saying No but i

This shelter is the worst shelter I have ever dealt with in my lifetime, being an owner of dogs for more than 30 years this place treated our family as if we were not good enough for them rather than there dogs. They would prefer to have their animals to themselves and not give them up for adoption. They did not give us a chance with a dog that got along great with us but a little on the skittish side with our child. My son is 8yrs old and has had many dogs by his side as well just needed some more time with the dog to work with him. Unbelievable treatment meaning very rude and stuck up, after driving down there 2.5 hours and they would not even consider us for an animal. They had so many objections before we had even walked in the door, believe they made there decision before they even had met us. Terrible place to go adopt an animal from. If they love these animals so much they should be trying hard to get families to care for them. Also believe we were in court with these people over trying to adopt a dog. I'm really sorry I even tried to put my family through this let alone my son which was extremely upset about not getting the dog that he liked. They also had no sincerity towards my son when he was upset about them saying NO to him they just figured he ought to get over it within seconds. Will never recommend anyone to this center.

Nasty, Rude, Obnoxious. This place is run by ego-maniacal spinsters who look down their noses at everyone. If you are not retired and home 23 hours a day, they will refuse to adopt to you. Only retired people seem to meet their excessively stringent adoption requirements. And if you have young kids, forget it. Don't even bother to try and adopt here. These power hungry narcissists will grill you, insist on massive amounts of personal information, and then refuse you anyway. They run this place like it is their own personal Gulag.

Rude. plain and simple, these people are the Nazis of animal rescues. They treat you like your on trial before THEY decide if you can handle a pet... The second I walked in the door I was treated with nothing but smugness and rudeness. I assume it was because I was younger. They didnt show me one ounce of respect. They interogated me, meaning they looked over my adoption form oIN THE LOBBY. They didnt even give me the privacy of a conference room. Nope, right there in the open. I will NEVER consider any animal from these Nazis again. If your not a 90yo woman, forget it, they wont adopt to you. Dont wast your time.

The Animal League of Green Valley, (TALGV) cares about animals, provides the new owners with everything they need to get started, including dog food and toys. They have volunteers that walk the dogs every day, sit and pet the small ones and play with them. I think they go above and beyond a rescue service. I have two dogs, both are from TALGV.
