Indiana Underground Plant Protection was formed by the owners and operators of underground facilities in Indiana as a means of reducing damage to those facilities. The organization was started with seven principal utility members in 1981, and now has grown to more than 350 members. It is a nonprofit corporation that provides contractors, excavators, homeowners with a single toll-free number to call for locating and marking of these underground facilities. The organization notifies only member utilities and does not locate the facility itself. Indiana Underground Plant Protection is open 24-hours, seven-days a week to accept requests for buried line location. Located in Greenwood, Ind., its damage prevention specialists are professionally trained to obtain specific information concerning locate requests.
