Mulches:
Regular Brown Mulch - Medium Grade, Double Shredded slab wood (mostly oak). It has a rugged/coarser appearance than the bark and sifted mulch. It contains wood, making it a dark brown color. Longer lasting than finer mulches and more resistant to "washing" in heavy rain. Decomposes slower than finely shredded mulch. This is the most popular and sells the most. As with all natural mulch, sun fading occurs over time.
Brown Sifted Mulch - Better Grade. Same as the Brown Mulch except it has been screened to remove the larger pieces. It is as fine as the Bark, but not as dark. It is more consistent in texture than the coarser regular brown mulch. Some describe it as "Triple Shredded". It does decompose faster than the coarser mulches above. As with all natural mulch, sun fading occurs over time.
Bark Mulch - Better Grade. Finely ground, all hardwood bark (mostly oak). Some people call this "triple ground". Because of its fine consistency and being mostly bark, it decomposes quicker than other mulches. Bark is almost black when first laid and when wet but fades to a grayish color as the sun fades it. As with all natural mulch, sun fading occurs over time.
Dyed Red, Black or Brown - Environmentally safe, shredded and dyed. This mulch is not made from recycled pallets or construction debris. Color will resist fading from the sun better than "natural" mulch. Lesson learned...mulch will wash out if it's put down before or during rain!
Playground Chips - All wood chips approximately 1 inch, no bark. Doesn't pack down like mulch and provides a natural "cushion". Larger pieces stay out of kid's clothes and keep Mommy happier. Great for covering muddy pet areas and pedestrian walks.
"Dump" Mulch & Compost - The Washington County Landfill produces a cost effective alternative to those who need large volumes of mulch to cover a big area. The mulch and compost is a low quality and has some trash mixed in, but is sold by the ton and relatively inexpensive. I will pick up and deliver the mulch for you. 10 yards weighs 3 - 4 tons. I charge by the hour for my truck (1 hr minimum) Click on Equipment for Hire.
Mushroom Dirt - Sometimes called mushroom mulch. An organic combination of soil manures and hay. Makes an excellent soil conditioner/ fertilizer for gardens and flower beds. (Google Mushroom Mulch for additional information)
Soils:
Top Soil - Raw top soil that has not been screened. It can contain clumps, roots and rocks (not boulders). Screened Top Soil - I sift my topsoil through a 3/8 inch screen, so it's free of clumps and other debris. It's really nice to work with when compared to regular unscreened topsoil. Some uses include resurfacing a poor lawn before replanting, filling in along driveways and making raised gardens. Garden Blend - Screened topsoil mixed 2:1 with rich manure based compost.
