Recognizing the depth and breadth of the crisis for both local families and those who serve them, The Memorial Foundation's Board members and staff responded. We moved to bolster local agencies' yeoman efforts to continue to provide the highest quality care and resources regardless of increasing demand. True to our mission to improve the quality of life for people in our region by supporting worthy nonprofit organizations, we looked to honor grant requests from agencies seeking to sustain, shelter, empower and protect those most vulnerable among us. It is a mission that has never felt more urgent since our inception in 1994. Founded with proceeds from the sale of Memorial Hospital in Madison, The Memorial Foundation made a commitment to continue to serve the community once cared for by a beloved hospital. In 2009, we honored that commitment by giving local nonprofits $7.9 million - much of it for the purpose of helping people keep body and soul together as we all weather this economic storm. The work those nonprofits did and the services they provided made a difference in the most poignant and visceral of ways. Collected in the following pages are their stories from the frontlines of service - stories about making today bearable and tomorrow better. The Memorial Foundation is honored to be a part of them. We hope that you enjoy your visit to our website and that it helps you gain an understanding of our purpose.
