was surprised to read all the positive reviews HUMC has received, our experience was nothing short of disastrous. My grandmother was admitted at HUMC for nearly three months suffering from various complications due to diabetes. On the 4th floor which was where she spent a considerable amount of time the nurses were rude, not very helpful and when approached it seemed as though we were a bother to them. They spent a great deal of time fighting amongst themselves. There was one which was particularly brutal, her name was Mercy. At one point my grandmother lost consciousness and she wanted to force a pill down her throat by force with apple juice. She wasted time in calling the doctors and only did so when my mother hysterically ran to the nurses station and told them they were going to let her die. In turns out, she was having breathing difficulties and had to be rushed to ICU and connected to a breathing machine. Afterwards, my grandmother's teeth were lost and we spoke to the supervisor, nurses and doctor and no one was interested in helping us locate them. My grandmother had a small surgery on her back and it took FOUR phone calls for the surgeon to come back and remove them weeks after the surgery. When he finally came, it only took him a few minutes to remove them. I spent many days and nights there at my grandmother's bedside and noticed over and over again the poor treatment the elderly received. Those with no families to watch over them received the worst care. For instance, they brought lunch for an elderly lady who was on the same floor and left the food on the table a distance away from the lady's bed. The lady could not reach her food so my sister and I pushed the food towards her and started feeding her because we felt so badly. The nurses only came after they saw us helping the lady eat. There were two nurses in the ICU one night with various patients and they took turns sleeping all night long only leaving one nurse at all times to care for all the patients in that unit. We tried on various occassions to have her removed from this institution and transferred to another but they made it impossible for us to do so and they wanted to charge us for the use of an ambulance to do so. Another negative episode, happend when my grandmother's IV needle came out. She lost so much blood she required a blood transfusion the next day. My grandmother required oxygen treatments and we had to keep track of when they were scheduled or else they would give them to her back to back. It seems they never took the time to note when the last treatment took place and when the next one was needed. Finally, she was moved to the 6th floor which is where she passed away. The night they moved her it was raining and they put her in a room where the rain was coming in through the window frame and had no heat. The room was freezing! When we complained the nurse said it was the only room they had and that she could not do anything but give us some towels to soak up the water. We requested to speak to a social worker and miraculously a room became available just down the hall. We met so many people there who had the same complaints we did and the icing on the cake came when we received a notice from Medicare listing what they had paid for services which came to approxiamately 500k. Please do yourselves a favor and seek medical care elsewhere for yourself and your loved ones. My grandmother was very ill, but we never expected her to pass away and we believe she did because of the horrible and unprofessional care she received at this hospital.
