City and County of Honolulu, Hawaii, is situated in the southern region of the Hawaiian island of Oahu. The population of the city is approximately 400,000. The population of Honolulu County is around 1 million. With its subtropical, mild climates the island city has become a popular destination for tourists. Attractions and destinations in the area include Waikiki and Ala Moana beaches, The Bernice Pauabi Bishop Museum, Honolulu Academy of Arts and the Polynesian Cultural Center. The County of Oahu began operating in1905, and two years later was renamed the City and County of Honolulu. The city operates under mayor-council type of government in which there is a separation between legislative and executive functions. When Honolulu (meaning sheltered harbor) was named is unclear. The old name for Honolulu is said to be Kou.
