Dr. Carvounis graduated from the University of Cambridge (B.A., M.A.) and then completed his medical degree at the University of Oxford. Following an internship at the Mayo Clinic at Rochester, MN he completed his ophthalmology residency at the George Washington University in Washington D.C. Dr. Carvounis completed fellowship training in Diseases and Surgery of the Retina and Vitreous at Baylor College of Medicine (2007). He was then recruited to the faculty at Baylor College of Medicine where he served as Program Director of the Fellowship in Diseases and Surgery of the Retina and Vitreous since 2010 and became Associate Professor in 2013. He also has an appointment as Clinical Professor at the George Washington University.
Dr. Carvounis is a nationally and internationally acclaimed expert in the field with over 120 papers or presentations at national and international scientific meetings. He has been a pioneer in surgery for macular holes and retinal detachment without face-down positioning, has published his excellent results on vitrectomy for epiretinal membranes with good baseline vision and has taught instruction courses for retina specialists on vitrectomy for complications of diabetes at the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the World Congress of Ophthalmology.
Dr. Carvounis was elected by his peers as one of the ‘Top 40 under 40 Ophthalmologists’ in the world (2015) and has received the American Academy of Ophthalmology Achievement Award (2015), the Honor Award of the American Society of Retina Specialists (2014), the Best Doctors Award annually (2009-2016) the Houstonia Top Doctors in Houston 2016 award. He is a peer reviewer for 16 scientific journals.
Dr. Carvounis is on the Board of Directors of the Retina Research Foundation.
